What Your Leather Needs
The right material is just the beginning. The right care determines whether your piece lasts ten years — or twenty.
Good leather is not a disposable product — it's a living material that ages with you. With a little attention, it develops a patina that no factory can replicate. This guide shows what your KATAAB piece needs and what it doesn't tolerate.

Our Materials
Every KATAAB piece begins with a conscious material choice. We exclusively use full-grain leather from tanneries in Italy — no split leather, no PU-coated, no adhesive-laminated.
Vegetable-tanned leather
Slowly tanned with plant extracts. The result: a leather that darkens over time, develops an individual patina, and takes on a unique character depending on use. Durable, repairable, biodegradable.
Chrome-tanned leather
Softer, more uniform in color and texture, more water-resistant than vegetable-tanned leather. We use it where suppleness and color consistency are required: for linings, soft accessories, and bag bases.
Full-grain leather
The grain layer of the leather remains fully intact — no sanding, no coating. Full-grain leather shows scars, veins, and wrinkles of the animal hide. Each piece is thus naturally unique.
Inner material & fittings
Linings made from high-quality textile or fine split leather. All fittings are brushed or nickel-plated brass: corrosion-resistant, heavy, patinated over time. No plastic on structural components.
Care — Step by Step
Caring for leather is simpler than it sounds. Four basic rules, consistently applied, are enough for a lifelong relationship with your piece.
Regular Dusting
Wipe your piece every two to four weeks with a soft, dry cloth. Dust and dirt that settles in the pores draws moisture and attacks the leather in the long term.
Remove Moisture
In case of rain or dampness: blot dry immediately, let air dry — never near radiators or in the sun. Heat extracts fat from the leather. Re-condition after drying.
Condition with Leather Grease
Every three to six months, work in a small amount of natural leather grease (beeswax or lanolin-based). Use a small amount, apply in circular motions, allow to fully absorb. No silicone, no shoe polish substitute.
Proper Storage
Store in a cool, dry place — not in plastic bags and not in direct sunlight. For bags: stuff with paper. For wallets: avoid overfilling.

The Patina — Why Your Piece Gets More Beautiful
Vegetable-tanned leather oxidizes over time — this is not a defect; it's its most beautiful feature. Oils from your hand, UV light, contact with clothing: all these build a deep, warm hue that gives each piece its own character.
Two identical wallets, carried by two different people, will look completely different after five years. That's the difference from mass-produced goods that age instead of maturing.
A good patina begins in the first month. Wear your new KATAAB piece daily — the leather absorbs the imprint of your use particularly quickly during this break-in period.

Frequently Asked Questions about Care
My leather has a water stain — what should I do?
No need to panic. Lightly moisten the entire piece with a damp cloth so the stain dries evenly. Let it air dry completely, then condition with leather grease.
The leather smells different after a while — is that normal?
Yes. Especially vegetable-tanned leather develops its own scent over time — this is the interplay of plant substances, your hands, and the environment. This is the smell of real, living leather.
Can I clean leather with a damp cloth?
For light soiling: yes, with a slightly damp cloth and gentle pressure. Then let it dry and condition. For stubborn stains, we recommend a professional pH-neutral leather cleaner.
How often should I condition a piece used daily?
With daily use, three to four care applications per year are sufficient. If the leather appears dry or rough, earlier. Over-conditioning is possible — too much grease clogs the pores.
