What truly makes a wallet minimalist
The word "minimalist" is attached to almost anything with clean lines. A truly minimalist wallet has three measurable characteristics: it is slim when filled. It holds what you carry daily. And it doesn't grow over time.
A wallet that measures 8mm empty and swells to 18mm when filled is not a minimalist wallet. The construction is key: leather stiffness, compartment depth, pulling direction. Not the appearance.

Number of cards
How many cards do you carry daily?
Not how many you own — how many leave the house. Most people carry 3 to 5 cards: bank card, ID, health insurance card, loyalty card, travel card. Be honest with yourself about this number before choosing capacity.
Carrying style
How and where do you carry?
Front pocket: height is crucial, the piece must slide smoothly. Back pocket: thickness is crucial. Handbag: more leeway. Think about the pockets of the clothes you actually wear daily — not your best pants.
Cash
Do you need a coin pocket?
Those who live completely cashless immediately have an easier choice. Those who regularly carry coins — very common in Germany — are better off choosing a wallet with a coin pocket or combining a slim card holder with a separate coin purse.
Material
Which leather?
With a minimalist wallet, there's no padding to hide poor material. The leather is the wallet. KATAAB uses vegetable-tanned cowhide: initially firm, it develops character and patina with use. Bonded Leather — pressed leather scraps with polyurethane — should generally be avoided for anything intended to last.

Slim Wallet
The everyday standard for minimalist carrying. This is the core KATAAB format: reasonable capacity, bill compartment, truly slim. Under 10mm when filled.
6 to 8 cards + bills
Bifold
More compact than a classic folding wallet, but larger than a slim wallet. For those who carry a bit more and prefer the familiar opening motion. Choose only bifolds with tight compartments — open compartments fray over time.
